This project centres around creating a safe, tranquil, communal space – exclusively for university students, named YANA (You Are Not Alone). Making the transition into university can be hard for many students, whilst this can be an exciting change, it can also be a confusing, unsettling time as well. The YANA space can be set up within any student union, as the components within the’YANA kits’ can be assembled without difficulty, and without the unnecessary need for permanent building work.

These separate components can be arranged at the university’s discretion, each curated slightly differently from the other, depending on the space available within the SU. Whilst most university’s do contain a student union, these can be; A) hard to find, B) schematic and uninviting, and C) limiting and uninformative. To combat these errors, the YANA setup can be found within the heart of any student union, has a contemporary, engaging design to draw students in, and allows students to subdue the stresses and pressures that university life can bring. The YANA kits are comprised of; The Waiting Area, The Student Advice Centre, The YANA Library, and The Relaxation Area.

Although it is apparent that universities across the nation have now recognised the importance of mental health and wellbeing whilst studying, students are still finding it challenging when it comes to sourcing, and accessing the resources that have been made available to them. YANA has been designed simply to signpost existing support within the university, so that students know where to get help should they need it.
